On June 24, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at the Great Hall of the People.

Wen said since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 34 years ago, both sides have maintained mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual support for each other and their relations have withstood various tests with substantial cooperation developing in an all-round manner. The belief that "China and Thailand are as close as one family" has been deeply rooted in the hearts of both peoples, he said. As a friendly neighbor, China sincerely hopes that Thailand will maintain social solidarity and make greater achievements in national development. "Under the new circumstances, China will work with Thailand to cement the traditional friendship and strategic cooperation and earnestly safeguard common interest to push forward bilateral ties," Wen said.

Wen proposed that the two sides maintain coordination on bilateral relations and major international issues to safeguard peace and stability of the region. He urged both sides to implement the agreement on economic and trade cooperation and overcome the impact of the global financial crisis. In particular, he suggested both sides take effective measures to maintain steady trade development. China encouraged its enterprises to invest and develop in Thailand and participate in the country's infrastructure construction, Wen said, adding that both countries should ensure a proposed highway from Kunming, China to Bangkok to be completed at an early date and promote trade and logistics in the Mekong River area. Meanwhile, both countries should work more closely in the areas of culture, tourism, health and agricultural technical training on the existing basis, he added.

Wen said that boosting regional trade and investment was a crucial task for countries in East Asia. He called on countries in East Asia to "deepen financial cooperation and strengthen infrastructure construction to increase the ability to confront economic and financial risks." Both sides should also expand cooperation on social affairs, humanities, energy, food security and disease control and prevention to promote the building of East Asian Community, Wen said. China would always support the leading role of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in East Asian cooperation.

Abhisit said Thailand and China have enjoyed a long-term friendship and the two peoples share profound traditional friendship. The relationship and cooperation in all areas have improved and the partnership between both countries has been developing continuously. Thailand is ready to keep close communication with China and enhance their multi-level and wide-ranging cooperation to push forward bilateral ties and promote regional peace and prosperity. He noted that amid the financial crisis, Thailand would expand cooperation on trade, agriculture, tourism, culture, education, inspection and quarantine with China. The Thai side welcomes China to expand investment in Thailand and participate in its infrastructure construction. Abhisit expressed congratulation on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and appreciated the achievements that China has made in tackling the global financial crisis. He reaffirmed Thailand adheres to the one-China policy.

Abhisit said Thailand would like to push forward cooperation between China and ASEAN and jointly maintain regional stability.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Following the talks, the two leaders attended a signing ceremony of relevant cooperation documents between the two countries.

Before the talks, Wen held a ceremony to welcome Abhisit at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Lai Ming, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiu San Society, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming, Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya and Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Guan Mu attended the welcoming ceremony.
